Railway, heritage bastion for city tourism in Cuba

The values ​​of industrial heritage return to life here today in the city of Camaguey, one of the most cultural potential of Cuba, and which is among the attractions for city tourism.

The Railway Museum, a dynamic project in charge of the Office of the Historian of the City of Camagüey (OHCC), is a passage in time with the exhibition of steam locomotives built in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The region exhibits different architectural attractions and spaces with rich history, as it was one of the first in Latin America to have its first section of railroad since April 5, 1846 with the inauguration of the route between Port-au-Prince and the town of Nuevitas, where it settled in 1514 the Princely Village.

Visitors from various parts of the world 'can enjoy a virtual museum where, with the use of new technologies, who arrives after taking out their newsletter, participates in an imaginary trip with three stops, receiving all the available information' promotes the OHCC digital portal .

Beyond exploitation as a tourist attraction, 'this project combines recreation with knowledge. It has a classroom for children and young people, which will host several circles of interest in nearby schools', according to José Rodríguez, Director of the OHCC.

The use of heritage to generate economic and financial resources, is one of the keys to boost city tourism in a town like Camagüey, the cradle of important personalities of Cuban culture, such as the national poet, Nicolás Guillén.

Located in the vicinity of the Historic Center, declared by UNESCO Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the new Railway Museum assumes the exhibition of two of the oldest locomotives in the country, with a manufacturing date of 1882 and 1890.
