Sancti Spíritus

Sancti Spíritus is a city of Cuba located in the central area of the island, and capital of the province of the same name.

It was founded on June 4, 1514 by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, on the banks of the Tuinucú River, in the now called town of Pueblo Viejo, about 8 kilometers from its current location and in 1522 it was transferred to its current headquarters, on the banks of the Yayabo River. It was the starting point of the Spanish conquest of the Yucatan.

The city retains a historic center with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, among which the Parroquial Mayor, built in 1680 and the Bridge over the Yayabo River, unique in Cuba from the colonial era, declared a National Monument. The museums of Colonial Art, Provincial History and Natural History and La Casa de La Guayabera stand out.
