Salinas de Brito

To fully enjoy the place you have to visit it in winter, when some 65 species of migratory birds arrive fleeing the cold, coming from the northern hemisphere of the planet.

From the north of the continent, the different species of migratory birds will remain in place for several months.

It is reached by means of a route created by José Brito Santos, a character remembered as a shady businessman, who occupied the area in 1948 and built precarious ponds to extract salt, placed railroad tracks to transport it and even an airstrip.

Immediately impacts the beauty of almost virgin forests and marshes, with the four species of Cuban mangroves and abundance of precious woods such as Antillean mahogany or charcoal ebony, used in the construction of railroad tracks and luxurious mansions in Havana.

The site especially attracts bird watchers interested in Cuban ornithology, but also other visitors who prefer to practice kayaking, hiking or try their luck in one of the best destinations in the Caribbean for fly fishing of species such as bonefish or pomfret.

Tourists, particularly Europeans, often admire the perfect conservation of this ecosystem, which belongs to the Ciénaga de Zapata National Park, with nostalgia, as it reminds them of the appearance of their native countries when they had not yet lost the battle against the development industrial.
