Plaza de Marte

It is one of the most central spaces of the city, emerged at the end of the 18th century. The square is a tribute to the independence of Cuba. By municipal agreement, in June 1899 it was given the name of Plaza de la Libertad, although the people of Santiago continued to call it Plaza de Marte.

It is one of the favorite places of the inhabitants of Santiago. In its surroundings you can find institutions the Iris Jazz Club, the Rex and Libertad Hotels of the Islazul Hotel Chain, the Patio los Dos Abuelos, the latter space reserved for traditional music.

You can also find places to enjoy two drinks very coveted by the people of Santiago: the Fraternity Chocolate and La Gran Sofía Café, as well as one of the most important shopping centers in the city: “Plaza de Marte”.
