Casas particulares in Sancti Spíritus

Sancti Spiritus city was founded in June, 1514 in an inland area near Trinidad due to a powerful reason: the information released by the Indians that in the inland area of Cuba there were much gold. Since its founding, the town would be isolated from the rest of the country due to its distance to the coast, a fact that caused that the population had to reuse constantly all the resources at their disposal to survive and create trading mechanisms through pathways inside the country.

By 1522, the people of Trinidad began emigrating to the north and settled near Yayabo, a large river nearby the town, a place where the village was finally settled in this year. The migratory movements were aimed at looking for gold mines and Indians but some years later the objective was transformed, because the inhabitants of the town began cultivating fertile lands around the river because of the large spaces they had to explore.

Although the city was abandoned at the beginning, the neighbors quickly devoted to the ranching, agriculture and the tobacco plantations as a livelihood. It was not until the late seventeenth century when it begins to populate the huge territory of Sancti Spiritus as a solution to their isolation in the absence of a good marine access, the main means of communication and transportation during the colonial period.

In the early eighteenth century, Bishop Jerónimo Valdés proposes to transfer the cathedral to the town of Sancti Spiritus. Coupled to the incipient development of the population, ranching became the major economic force in the region, to the point that surplus ranching headed for Havana, where meat consumption was increasing, although the town was suffering from depopulation and the lack of an output port for their products.

During the first half of the nineteenth century, the establishment of a port was the main battle of the people from Sancti Spiritus, a situation that would change in 1847, when Zaza river became navigable for over 7 leagues. Similarly, in 1863 it was inaugurated the first railroad, which resulted in an increase in cattle wealth that transformed the city into the largest producer of meat. To this date, the villa was inert, watching the progress of the surrounding villas.

Thanks to the austere development reached for the village, in 1867, Sancti Spiritus received the title of City. In the first decades of the twentieth century, the city became one of the most flourishing agricultural center in Cuba for its production of milk, meat, dried beef and ham.

The boom in the early decades of the twentieth century brought changes in the center of the city of Sancti Spiritus. But the Republican transformations and status of capital of the new province of that name established in 1976, with the sequel to many environmental impacts have not blurred the old character of this town declared, along with her sisters, National Monument on October 10, 1978.
